"To teach is to learn"

Standard 2

“Educators act ethically and maintain the integrity, credibility and reputation
of the profession.”

“Educators are role models. Educators are held to a higher standard and are accountable for their
conduct on duty and off duty. Educators understand the law as it relates to their duties. Educators’
individual conduct contributes to the perception of the profession as a whole. Educators know and
recognize the importance of the Professional Standards for BC Educators.”

Ethics in education are non-negotiable for me. It means treating every student, colleague, and stakeholder with respect, fairness, and integrity. It’s about upholding the trust placed in me as an educator and ensuring that my actions always align with the best interests of my students.

This standard reminds me that my role as an educator extends beyond imparting knowledge; it includes modeling ethical behavior and decision-making. I believe that my actions in the classroom and within the school community serve as powerful examples for my students. I strive to create an environment where they witness and internalize the values of honesty, respect, and empathy.

But ethical practice isn’t just about following a set of rules; it’s about thoughtful reflection. I regularly examine my teaching methods, interactions, and decisions. I ask myself tough questions: Did I provide equitable opportunities for all students? Did I treat each student with the dignity they deserve? Did I create an inclusive and safe learning environment? These reflections guide my actions and help me grow as an educator.

This standard also emphasizes the importance of seeking feedback and learning from it. I actively seek input from my students, colleagues, and mentors. Constructive feedback, even when it points to areas for improvement, is a valuable tool for growth. I embrace it as an opportunity to refine my teaching practices and better serve my students.

Furthermore, ethical and reflective practice extends to staying current with research and best practices in education. I invest time in professional development, attending workshops, conferences, and staying connected with the education community. This commitment to learning ensures that I can provide the most effective and relevant education to my students.
